Speaker stands

Hey John, I was wondering what you recommend for speaker stands, do you suggest building them and what rules apply ?
I see sand filled tubes (three of them to balance weight) with wooden platforms, decoupling top and bottom.
Is this the best cost-effective way ? I hope this one hasn't been talked already.
